"Your children will be like olive shoots around your table"
(Ps. 128:3)

- Help! My family is a mess!
- I always said I'd never be like my mother, but I'm becoming just like her.
- I was physically abused as a child -- now I'm afraid of hurting my own kids.
- I see a lot of myself in my children and that scares me.
- My kids hang out with the wrong crowd. What can I do about it?

Parenting can be a challenging task at best. It is made even more difficult when we carry with us a lot of unresolved pain from the past.

Extended Description

Olive Shoots Around Your Table is a comprehensive examination of the factors that contribute to family dysfunction and how, by God's grace, we can break free from them -- first in our own lives, and then in the lives of our children. In this way, we can learn to raise truly healthy kids in an increasingly unhealthy world.

John Visser is Senior Pastor of the 700-member Maranatha Church in Belleville, Ontario. He has previously pastored churches in Nova Scotia and Alberta. In addition to other pastoral duties, he carries on an extensive counselling ministry designed to help people discover and live out the freedom of life in Christ. He and his wife, Michelle, have four children -- David (married), Michael, Deborah, and Jonathan.

"This book is an important contribution to our Christian understanding of how humans are intended to mature in healthy, functional families. It also shows us how, with God's grace and ability, they can be helped to healing when it all goes so tragically wrong.

"Years of skilled experience and compassionate wisdom are distilled in this book, which will encourage both counsellors and counsellees alike. A truly Christian psychotherapy for the dysfunctional family is desperately needed. This book brings us all a lot closer.

"Highly recommended!"

Terry Burrows, B.Sc., M.D. Founder, General Practice Psychotherapy Association, Toronto, Ontario

"I commend this book to pastors, counsellors, and 'ordinary' Christians who desire to see the freedom of Christ reigning anew in both individuals and families."

Jeff Boerger, Pastor, St. Margaret's Anglican Church, Belleville, Ontario
