your prescriptions

It is our goal to provide optimum and efficient prescription refill service to all our patients. We will endeavour to provide you with enough refills until your next scheduled appointment, so that we may reduce unnecessary phone calls for prescription refills.

Determining principles

  • Quality medical care dictates appropriate supervision of both the acute and chronic conditions that are being treated with drugs.
  • All prescriptions are valid for only 1 year from date of issue.
  • Pharmacists may not issue prescription drugs without a valid prescription on file.
  • Prescriptions are a legal document for which the physician assumes full responsibility.
  • Phoning prescriptions to a pharmacy, or writing prescriptions, without seeing the patient is not an insured service under Medicare.

Usual length of prescriptions

1 year

  • Birth Control Pills - pap test needed
  • Thyroid medication - blood test needed
  • Diabetic medications

6 months

  • Heart and blood pressure medications
  • Stomach and intestinal drugs
  • Cholesterol lowering agents
  • Asthma medication

1 - 6 months (depending on condition, severity and risks)

  • Psychiatric drugs such as antidepressants
  • Sedatives and sleep medications
  • Anti-arthritic medication

No refills

  • Narcotics (e.g. Tylenol #3, Demerol, Codeine)
  • Antibiotics (except for acne, prevention of ear or urinary infections)

Please anticipate your needs by checking the number of refills on your prescription bottles or by asking the pharmacist. Ask for refills during your visit if you need them. If your prescription has run out, please make an appointment. For yearly medications which require a pap test, please plan ahead and book several months in advance.
